Hockey Terminology
Centre Pass: The centre pass is a push or hit in any direction from the centre of the field
with all players in their own half of the field.
Playing the ball: This is stopping, deflecting or moving the ball with the stick.
A Stroke: This occurs when the ball has been moved by playing, striking or deflecting it
with the stick.
Penalty Stroke: This is a push, flick or scoop of the ball from the penalty spot.
A 16: A hit from the 16 yard line (14.63 metres)
It’s a short!: A penalty corner
Hit: This involves a swinging movement of the stick towards the ball.
Push: A push moves the ball along the ground by a pushing movement of the stick after
the stick has been placed close to the ball. When a push is made, both the ball and the
head of the stick are in contact with the ground.
Flick: A flick occurs when the ball is pushed to produce a spinning effect and as a result,
is raised off the ground.
Scoop: A scoop occurs when a stationary or slow moving ball is raised off the ground by
means of a shovel movement of the stick, after the head of the stick is placed slightly
under the ball.
Obstruction: Stopping a player playing the ball with either body or stick.
Back of the stick: Using the curved edge of the stick to play the ball.
Dangerous play: Any situation that is necessary to take evasive action eg raised ball,
playing the ball when lying on the ground, etc.
Through ball: A forward pass made by a player on a diagonal angle.
Straight ball: A forward pass straight ahead of the player passing the ball.
Square ball: A sideways pass by a player to his/her right or left.
Shot at goal: Any stroke or deflection by an attacker from within the circle towards the
goal.
Persistent: means the first time and all subsequent times after a warning or penalty is
given for any particular offence.
Time-wasting: is any action or lack of action which prevents play from continuing or
commencing within a reasonable time.
Misconduct: This is rough or dangerous play, time-wasting, intentional offences or bad
behaviour.
